Image Transfers

Image transfers are often referred to as a “crossover” art form, a type of art existing in a realm between conventional photography and handcrafted art.  In creating image transfers, the intent is not to necessarily duplicate a perfect image, but rather to transform reality using individual creativity.

To create an image transfer, an original print or negative is exposed onto Polaroid film.  Before the film fully develops, the two film parts are separated and the negative side is placed onto watercolor paper.  The negative is later removed, leaving an image which has been transferred onto the paper.  Selected parts of the image are then hand colored to enhance the image.    The technique used to create image transfers results in no two images being exactly alike.
